Green bunting, giant shamrocks, Irish flags, inflatable leprechauns and gobs of garden gnomes are sprouting all over Tybee Island, as homeowners and businesses get ready for the 1st Annual Paint Tybee Ireland Green competition.
Sponsored by the Tybee Post Theater, the contest is a way to fill the island with socially distanced St. Patrick’s Day spirit in a year when official parades and parties have been cancelled due to the lingering pandemic. More than 50 homeowners signed up to decorate their homes and compete for the pot o’gold: $1,000 goes to the first-place home, $500 to second place, and $250 to third place.
The Paint Tybee Ireland Green judges will be touring the island this Sunday morning (March 14) checking out the creativity, artistry and overall awesomeness of the competition. They will depart the Tybee Post Theater on Van Horne Avenue at 10 am aboard a float to begin the tour, which will take about two hours. Competing homes and businesses are found on nearly every street on the three-mile island. The winners will be announced live on Facebook from the Theater at high noon St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.
The Theater is encouraging residents and visitors to tour the homes beginning this weekend, via car, bike, golf cart or on foot. Here is the link to the digital map! It works best if you have the Google Maps app installed on your mobile phone: www.tinyurl.com/PaintTybeeGreen2021 Printed maps will also be available and can be picked up at the Theater, 10 Van Horne Ave., Tybee Island, GA 31328.
The prize money was generously donated by Cindy Meyer, Seabolt Brokers. If anyone would like to make a contribution to the non-profit Tybee Post Theater to support this ongoing program, checks can be mailed to Tybee Post Theater, P.O. Box 2356, Tybee Island, GA 31328.
